Example: Let's say I keep arguing with John every single day at work. I would like to fix this problem through a positive affirmation. Here are some rules:

Rule #1: FIND OUT WHAT YOU WANT, NOT WHAT YOU DON'T WANT!!

Do you know what you are trying to achieve, your ultimate goal? It's important that you know what you are trying to achieve, not what you are trying to avoid. You have to look deep inside yourself and see if you can find out what you truly desire. So if we take the example above, maybe I don't care so much about John specifically, but what I really want is peace of mind, or maybe what I want is to have good relationships with people, or maybe I want to advance my career. Whatever it is, that's what your affirmation should be focused on.

Rule #2: KEEP IT IN THE PRESENT!!!

Your affirmation should always be in the present tense. For example, "I have peace of mind" or "I am advancing my career every day".

Rule #3: DON'T MAKE IT TOO SPECIFIC!!!

This is a common mistake that many people make when they create their own affirmation. As much as you want to improve on a specific situation, such as in this case, it's very important to keep your phrases as general as possible for the area of life you are trying to improve. In this case, if good relationships with people is what you truly want, then instead of saying "I always have a good relationship with John", you would affirm "I always have good relationships with other people".

Rule #4:  MAKE IT POSITIVE!!!

Always, always, always, state your affirmation in a positive way. Never affirm what you don't want to have or what you are trying to avoid. Always affirm what you are trying to achieve, and make it positive. So again, "I always have great relationships with other people" is a good example. Any phrase could and should be put in a positive way.

Rule #5: KEEP IT SHORT!!!

It shouldn't be longer than two lines. If you can't find a way to say what you want in two lines or less, then you should probably look again at what you really want and make your phrase more general.

 

How does it work? Does it always work?

The information you are trying to affirm needs to get to your subconscious, and this may take some time. How quickly you start feeling its effects all depends on how quickly the affirmation reaches your subconscious. This may depend on many factors, but a big contributing factor is how much you believe the affirmation to be true. Nevertheless, even if you don't believe the affirmation at all, it will still work, it will just take a little longer. The reason why some say it doesn't work is because they never gave it a full try, people stop after just a few days or a few weeks. This is no magic trick, you have to give some time for the affirmation to get absorbed and reach your subconscious. This may take anywhere from three weeks to several months.
